Owners of a family business have been encouraged to seek professional advice when it comes to succession planning. Geoffrey Todd, who is a family law specialist at London-based law firm Boodle Hatfield, has stated that handing a company down a generation is one of the biggest barriers to the survival of family businesses. In an interview with Fresh Business Thinking, he claimed that those who get help from professionals generally outperform those who don't and are far more likely to hand their business over without it going under. He said: "The owners of family businesses do need help in succession planning. Too often they leave it too late, which is quite understandable as it's not always eas

Contrary to popular belief, working from home may not be the key to achieving that all-important work-life balance. According to a study by academic Professor Timothy Golden, home-working might not be the right option for everyone. The results, published by Mail Online, found that those working from home "struggle to escape the strains of family life and find that the amount of time they spend at home makes domestic disputes worse". Furthermore, "those who get stressed in an office simply get more stressed if they work from home." It could dispel the automatic thinking that giving employees the chance to work from home in order to alleviate stress or anxiety is the best method to use. In fact, Golden's findings may even inspire a

CEOs may have to make a few crucial decisions in the weeks up to winter in order to combat potentially brutal weather conditions, reports managers.org.uk. Advice from the Forum of Private Business (FPB) suggests the UK is in for a harsh winter, so businesses need to begin for the icy chill brought by the fourth season. Measures that CEOs may need to execute in order to keep the family business running during the winter include working from home or transferring staff to another branch of the firm; one that is not affected by the weather. Leahy - who was speaking at Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) Annual Conference and Exhibition - cited tough times for Tesco in the 1990s in the face of rising brands like Sainsbury's. An academic has described how people will often get the wrong idea if an organisation is described as a family business. Professor Susan Hart, dean of Strathclyde Business School (SBS), told ft.com that such companies are often much larger than individuals expect, with a sphere of influence to match. She claimed that family businesses are traditionally treated as small firms, but as well as having the same issues as other large organisations, they have a selection of problems afflicting only them. Professor Hart explained that they must work out how to professionalise their operations, transfer family values and decide how ownership succession is to be handled. "Entrepreneurs tend to be runn

Theresa May, the home secretary, will soon announce plans to provide the support of 5,000 mentors to women starting or growing their own business. According to the Press Association, May has implied that the support provided by these mentors could help break down some of the barriers facing women at the top. She argued: "For too long, as a country, we have failed to make the most of the skills, experience and talents of women. We've made a good start but there are still barriers to women's progression and we are confronting them." Not only will this benefit the women - who could receive everything from leadership training to advice on raising finance - but the UK as a whole, May added. "Be

Firms trying to get the best out of their workforce have been advised that a combination of respect and appreciation is crucial. While a CEO may initially focus on how much of a financial reward employees are getting, Regus regional director Celia Donne pointed out on hrmagazine.co.uk that the way that everyone in a team treats each other has the potential to be just as important. She said: "Clever leaders will be using the time left this year to nurture their key staff with courtesy, respect and acknowledgement to ensure that they have the best team for commercial performance going into 2012." Donne suggested that a culture of respect will make sure that arrogance or complacency does not

Late payments are at an all time high and SMEs are bearing the brunt of the pain.  According to a new survey by Bacs, the industry body that manages automated payments such as Direct Debit, the amount owed to small and medium-sized businesses in late payments has reached an all-time high of £33.6billion. In total half of all UK SMEs are currently experiencing late payments from customers with business owners saying they are waiting on average 28 days more than the original payment terms to have their invoices settled. As the majority of businesses work to a 30-day payment term, many are now waiting at least two months to get paid. The average amount due to each SME now stands at £39,000. Understandably, one in ten bosses say that waiting for payments makes them ‘very worried’. The worst offenders
